BigCommerce features advanced SEO features to attract traffic and potential buyers. We have compiled a list of basic tips for BigCommerce SEO to get you started.
Write unique page titles and meta descriptions
Every page of your website should have a unique title tag and meta description that include relevant keywords. To modify the page titles and meta description in BigCommerce you will have to navigate to every product, category and web page individually. If no title tag or meta description is set for a page then it will automatically use the default descriptions found under Store Setup > Store Settings.
Optimise your product pages
Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to naming and describing your products, the process should be carefully completed.
The first step is to conduct keyword research and identify long-tail keywords that are related to your products (to include in the meta information). Next, create your product page with the target audience in mind; consider what information they are after. In the product descriptions, answer the standard who, what, when, where, how and why questions that demonstrate the product benefits. Get product shots, videos and reviews will help to push the visitor to make a purchase.
Make use of alt tags
BigCommerce refers to alt tags as ‘image descriptions’. Ensure you complete all of your image descriptions so as to allow search engines to better understand the contents of your website. Doing this will also allow your images to rank on image searches in Google.
When writing your image descriptions, simply state what is in the image and use relevant keywords. The product description will become the image alt tag.
Avoid duplicate Content
E-commerce sites are particularly at risk of duplicate content penalties because they host a lot of similar product pages. If left unresolved it can negatively affect the search engine rankings. Some of the ways to avoid and fix duplicate content include the following:
- Ensure every product description is unique. Having multiple pages of essentially the same wording is considered duplicate content, so make sure you combine pages that are similar. If you have a product with colour, size and material variations the best solution is to use one page with product options that display all the variations available.
- Watch out for query strings from product filtering causing many duplicate versions of the same page. While product filtering is good, you must ensure search engines don’t index the duplicate pages. This can be done by blocking faceted pages via the robots.txt file and managing parameter handling in Search Console.
Encourage product reviews
Encouraging users to leave a review is beneficial because future visitors are more likely to make a purchase because of the previous positive review’s influence. This is social proof in action.
Optimise your site for mobile
Websites that aren’t mobile optimised can be penalised greatly in search rankings. Not only are non-mobile friendly sites unattractive and difficult to use for mobile users, they also suffer from slow site speed. Having responsive website themes is essential to retaining the integrity and usability of your content.
Write unique content for all pages
Ensure that the titles and information on your category pages are specific and relevant to the shoppers making a purchasing decision. Creating unique user-targeted content for the rest of your website is vital to ranking well in search engines. An About Us page, Testimonials page, FAQs page and blog are just a few examples of unique content you can create. Another best practice is to add internal links that point to other relevant pages; this helps the user stay on the site for longer. For example, if you write a blog about a particular product, you should link to that product page or service page.
If you follow the steps above, your BigCommerce site will begin improving in search engine rankings and the overall visitor traffic should increase.
