5 Local SEO Tips for Small Businesses

Local SEO is important for many businesses, but it is especially important for small businesses. If you are a small business, it is essential to strengthen your digital presence to help your local customers find you online.

Here are five local SEO tips to help your small business flourish in the online market:

1. Create a Google My Business Page

Creating and verifying your business with Google My Business is absolutely essential for small businesses. Users researching your company can easily find basic, local information on a free Google listing, such as your address, opening hours and contact information.

2. Build a Niche Community

Find out who your customers are and build a clear niche in the market for your products. Leverage this in your keyword research by using the specific words or phrases your customers use to find your website. Instead of using broad keywords like ‘artificial plants’, promote your unique product with long-tail keywords such as ‘succulent in ceramic pot’.

3. Create Educational Content

Content marketing is important not only for improving keyword rankings but also for improving customer experience. Blog posts remain the most effective form of content, with 41% of marketers surveyed by Hubspot choosing this as the best type of content that bring in qualified leads. Use long-tail keywords that resonate with your niche market and your local area of operation in order to create great local content. These keywords have greater value for Google as they are usually more helpful to customers.

4. Nurture Your Reputation

80-90% of customers check online reviews before making a purchase. Potential customers will check Google reviews and other local reviewing websites to determine whether they choose to do purchase your products or services. Delight and nurture your past customers so they will be more inclined to promote your services through personal reviews and testimonials.

And if that fails, don’t underestimate the effectiveness of simply reaching out and asking for reviews. Try emailing your existing customers with a simple request like “I hope you enjoyed your recent shopping experience. Online reviews are important for us to grow our business. We would appreciate it if you could share your recent experience with us by writing a review on our Google My Business page.”

5. Be Involved in your Industry

Local involvement in your industry will increase your credibility. Website links and mentions from local bloggers and industry leaders are extra valuable for local SEO. Create valuable and shareable content, or hold and attend events to nurture a good network.
